2023 New Zealand General Election

The New Zealand General Election will be held on Saturday 14October 2023. Voters who are overseas during the General Election can vote fromWednesday 27 September to 7pm (NZ time), Saturday 14 October.

WHO CAN VOTE FROM OVERSEAS

The rules about who can vote from overseas have changed for thiselection. You can vote from overseas for the 2023 General Election if you areenrolled and: 

are a New Zealand citizen and have been in NewZealand in the last 6 years, or 

are a New Zealandpermanent resident and have been in New Zealand in the last 4 years.

Background

The rules for overseas voting have changed for the 2023 General Election.

From 31 March 2023 if you live overseas you can enrol if you’re a:

? New Zealand citizen who has been in New Zealand within the last 6 years, or

? New Zealand permanent resident who has been in New Zealand within the last 4 years.

This change reflects the challenges facing New Zealanders living overseas who haven’t been able to return home in the last three years.

After the 2023 General Election the eligibility criteria will change back to the previous settings of 3 years for New Zealand citizens and 12 months for New Zealand permanent residents.

? This change is temporary and applies only to the 2023 General Election.

Enrolling from overseas

Before you can vote, you must be enrolled. If you’re already enrolled, make sure your enrolment details are up to date.

● You can enrol to vote or update your details at vote.nz.

● Your address for the purposes of enrolment should be the last place you lived in New Zealand for one month or more. If you provide an overseas postal address, the Electoral Commission will send you information about how to vote from overseas.

Voting from overseas

The easiest and quickest way to vote from overseas is to download your voting papers. Voting papers will be available to download from Wednesday 27 September.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I’m a permanent resident?

For electoral purposes, you’re a permanent resident if you’re in New Zealand legally and not required to leave within a specific time.

If you’re Australian, Niuean, Tokelauan, or a Cook Islander, you can vote if you’re enrolled and you’ve lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more.

This includes someone who holds a valid resident or other visa if:

? you live in New Zealand

? your visa does not require you to leave New Zealand within a specified time

? you have lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more

? you are in New Zealand legally

? you are not subject to sections 15 or 16 of the Immigration Act, for example have a conviction for certain offences or have been deported from New Zealand or another country.

If you hold a 2021 Resident Visa, and you meet the criteria above, you are eligible to enrol and vote in New Zealand.

If you are on a work or study visa that requires you to leave New Zealand by a certain date you are not eligible to enrol and vote.

Which electorate do I enrol in?

You’ll enrol in the New Zealand electorate where you last lived for 1 month or more.

I am of Māori descent, can I be part of the Māori Electoral Option?

Yes. If you want to take part in the Māori Electoral Option, make sure to update your enrolment details to reflect that you are of Māori descent.

Can someone enrol on my behalf?

If you’re overseas you can ask someone to enrol on your behalf, as long as that person is enrolled to vote.
